Microsoft has officially announced the next major Windows and Surface event taking place on October 7, 2026 in San Francisco and hosted by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, Surface Chief Pavan Davuluri and NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang.
The event will explore “how local AI will shape the next chapter of the PC” and will unveil Microsoft’s vision of where local AI, next‑generation hardware, and the ongoing evolution of Windows 11 is heading next
A Strategic Focus on Local AI
Microsoft’s framing will be about the future of AI running directly on-device, not just in the cloud. With cloud compute costs rising and token‑omics becoming a more visible part of AI budgeting, the industry is shifting toward local inference, local acceleration, and local autonomy. I really hope we see some form of Copilot with local AI model in the mix too as this would make a lot of sense and add more meaning to the local AI and Copilot Cloud AI stories. I won’t hold my breath, but I can hope!
Though I have do not know the details, I expect the keynote will highlight:
- More details on the Surface Ultra Laptop including pricing and availability.
- New AI‑accelerated cloud and local workflow support natively within Windows
- Hardware designed specifically for local inference
- A tighter cloud‑to‑client AI strategy across Microsoft’s ecosystem
With Satya Nadella and Pavan Davuluri both on stage, this should be a broad, strategic, and deeply tied to Microsoft’s long‑term AI vision.
Laptop Ultra Powered by RTX Spark
With confirmation that NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang will be presenting with Satya at the event, I am expecting that RTX Spark will be the centrepiece of the keynote.

- Surface RTX Spark Dev Box
Microsoft announced both devices earlier this year, but crucial details such as pricing and availability have still not been shared until now.
This event is “expected” to fill those gaps, finally giving developers, creators, and early adopters the clarity they’ve been waiting for though I expect Santa might need to increase his budget for Xmas this year!!
Surface Events Still Matter
Much time has past from when we could compare a Surface event to an Apple Event, but as a big Surface Fan and MVP for Windows and Devices, I’ve always looked forward to these annual Microsoft hardware moments – the big Surface‑season keynotes that set the tone for the year.
Even now, they do still carry that sense of anticipation, even if the “pazow” factor isn’t quite what it was during the Panos Panay era.
Back then, we saw genuinely quirky form factors, bold industrial design experiments, and that unmistakable Apple‑esque stage presence – the kind of keynote where you felt the energy shift as soon as the lights dimmed. We have Surface Studio, Surface Go, and of course the Surface Duo (nice copy Apple) – It was hardware theatre.
Today – these events are different, more strategic (Microsoft do need to be more consumer excitable I think), and of course more (ok all) grounded in AI. They are less about surprise silhouettes and more about long‑term platform direction. But they remain impressive in their own way. Surface continues to innovate and set the direction of what great look likes from a hardware perspective, and it brings the narrative of where Windows is going next.
And with Surface Laptop Ultra already announced earlier this year, this October event feels like the natural continuation – the moment where Microsoft finally shares release dates, pricing, and the deeper story behind how RTX Spark and Windows will work together.
It’s in my diary and for me, it brings back a real sense of excitement around local AI, especially at a time when cloud costs, inference pricing, and token‑economics are becoming unavoidable realities for businesses and creators.
These events remind us why Surface exists – and why Windows continues to evolve.
Windows 11 and the Road to Redemption
There has been lots of work under the hood this past 12 months on a refocus on quality, efficiency and stability of Windows 11. Microsoft will likely talk more about their progress and more improvements (rather than AI Slop) coming to Windows 11, particularly through their Windows K2 initiative – a multi‑year effort aimed at reducing pain points and modernising the OS experience.
If you follow this or are a Windows Insider, then you’ll know that some early wins have already shipped (or shipping) in Windows 11, including the ability to resize and move the Taskbar – something users have been crying out for years.
But challenges remain:
- Windows updates (still) often ship with bugs
- There are still UI inconsistencies persist across legacy and modern components with some components still left over from Windows 7 days!!!
This event gives Microsoft an opportunity to demonstrate progress, rebuild confidence, and show what’s coming next as the AI Frontier evolution continues at pace. It’s worth noting that it precedes Microsoft Global Ignite conference which is also in San Fran from November 17-20
