Microsoft is introducing new Experimental and Beta channels that separate risky builds from stable ones, while also giving testers a clearer path to try features before they ship. You can read the full verbose version in the Windows Insider Blog
Current Insider Option

New options

Microsoft is giving the Windows Insider Program its biggest reset in years. This is the biggest change for a decade and brings lots of clarity, and Better options for consumer and enterprise to check out, test and feedback on new features coming to Windows.
As part of this, the current Canary, Dev, and Beta channels are going and in their place will be two clear channels that actually reflect how people want to test Windows.
Changes to Windows Insider Program
As of later this month the Insider Channels will now. Be represented by.
- Experimental : this replaces Canary + Dev builds and is where users will find the earliest new features. These builds will likely have some rough edges and feedback by users will also have the loudest voice and impact.
- Beta: this is a combination of the previous beta and release preview channels and delivers a stable, predictable, and fully documented build. Microsoft are also removing the frustrating A/B feature testing where some users would get different version or updates than others in the same channel.
Another big update is the ability to more easily
Switch between and upgrade between channels without having to reset / wipe your PC. This removes one of the biggest barriers to participating in new builds.
Goodbye Vibe. Many Insiders use third party tools like Vibe to active hidden features such as those included in A/B channels. Along with the channel complication, Microsoft are also. Introducing Feature Flags, which provides a similar opt in feature mode to what Edge has, allowing Windows Insiders to easily turn features on or off experimental features directly in a supported way.
My thoughts
The Insider programme has been messy and confusing for a while, with overlapping channels, unclear timelines, and features that appeared for some Insiders but not others.
At a roundtable event in Seattle last month, Microsoft openly acknowledged the frustration and it’s great to see how they have listed and responded to feedback and under new leadership for the Insider Program are now full revamping how the systems works.
This overhaul is about rebuilding trust with testers and getting better feedback before features ship.
Personally I really welcome this as its the most sensible Insider Update in years bringing clearer channels definatition, guaranteed feature access, easier switching, and more control for testers.
It starts rolling out later in April. 😍
